Гипотиреоидная кома (ГТК) – крайне тяжелое осложнение длительно некомпенсированного гипотиреоза, при котором летальность достигает 50–80 %. Впервые симптомы гипотиреоза у детей Th. B. Curling описал в 1850 г., в 1874 г. W. W. Gull дал описание гипотиреоза у взрослых. В 1878 г. W. M. Ord на базе морфологического исследования обнаружил атрофию щитовидной железы со следственными явлениями слизистого отёка кожи и подкожной клетчатки, что было названо микседемой. Гипотиреоидная кома (микседематозная) была описана в 1879 году.
