Assosiation of metabolic syndrome with antypsychotic therapy in female patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders
Abstract
Mortality rates among people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders are approximately three times higher than among mentally health population of the same age. There seems to be a tendency towards increased mortality risks in patients with cardiovascular diseases, which may be a result either of cardiotoxicity or metabolic effects of antipsychotics.
To determine the correlation between intake duration, dosage of antipsychotics and development of metabolic syndrome we examined 30 female patients with diagnosed schizophrenia spectrum disorders, including their current state, markers of metabolic syndrome, as well as current and archival clinical records.
The study shows that development of metabolic syndrome directly depends on the intake duration, the amount of lifetime antipsychotics consumption, as well as the dosage of antipsychotics. The outpatient stage of treatment, as far as it seems, has greater influence on the patients’ metabolism.
This study is one of the first attempts to draw doctors' attention to preventing metabolic effects of the antipsychotic therapy, based on real clinical practice in Republic of Belarus.
